Cherries
The Editorial
The almost now iconic "Cherries" editorial, the oversized cherries were meticulously designed with a specific focus on functionality and aesthetics.
Concept to Final Image
The primary objective was to ensure that each cherry was light enough to be easily moved by a single person, while also being stable and sturdy enough to support the model during the photoshoot. To achieve this delicate balance, I incorporated a wooden frame structure into the base of each cherry. This provided the necessary support while keeping the overall weight manageable.
In addition to the wooden frame, I layered on additional materials and carefully shaped them to form the cherries. After the basic structure was in place, several coats of paint and varnish were applied to give the cherries a polished and cohesive look. The desired aesthetic was to strike a balance between a cartoonish and hyper-realistic appearance, creating a visually appealing and unique set of props for the photoshoot.
"Achieving the right colours and rich saturation in front of the camera is an important factor for me. I want to make photos the viewer can get lost in, with details that draw them in and make them stare."
To complement the oversized cherries, four solid color backgrounds were utilized, each strategically lit to achieve different gradient values. This technique not only added depth and dimension to the photos but also eliminated the need for extensive post-production editing or digital manipulation. By carefully considering the lighting and background setup, I was able to enhance the overall visual impact of the photoshoot while maintaining the integrity of the props.
Overall, the meticulous design and execution of the oversized cherries, combined with the thoughtful use of lighting and backgrounds, contributed to the success of the "Cherries" editorial. The attention to detail and creative approach taken by myself resulted in a visually stunning and cohesive series of images that captured the desired aesthetic and brought the concept to life in a captivating and engaging way.
